Steve Martin17 July 2026There was a panel in my array that was only producing about half of the other ones. After getting the run around from the company that installed the system, I decided to contact Ilumen Solar based on their reviews. Best decision I made regarding my system. Even though the original panel was supposed to be replaced under warranty, Ilumen only charged an addition $50 to purchase and install a new panel. Two days later, instead of weeks of excuses, the panel was replaced and my system is at full power. I never have to worry about getting service again. Out of all the installers we contacted, Zach was the only one who didn't sound like a typical salesperson. His genuine passion for the industry is what ultimately sold us on the project. While the process took some time to get off the ground due to HOA/ Developer approvals, Zach and his team were incredibly communicative and supportive throughout the delays. The actual installation in 2023 went exactly according to plan. The entire installation team did a fantastic job keeping it clean with minimal visible exterior conduit. We strive to support local and just felt the nationwide companies were not a fit for us. Ilumen fit the bill on so many levels. Local Illinois company with a big company feel and capabilities. They answered countless questions and walked us through every detail to get our unique system reviewed by the local municipality, installed and ultimately approved for final inspection. Our house was heavily shaded by substantial oak and hickory trees. However, Ilumen didn't panic when we approached them about putting the system on our outbuilding and back-feeding to the house. Every other company wanted to trench up our yard or told us it wasn't possible. Ilumen went out of their way to meet our needs and provide a system that worked within our budget and our unique physical setup. Bryan Rathjen28 September 2025Illumen installed an expansion to my solar panels, an integrated Franklin battery system and two EV charging stations. The Franklin a-gates are performing perfectly and the system is well balanced between supply and demand across two separate subpanels. So far, I have not received a bill from ComEd since July as the solar power and batteries typically cover all of my electricity needs per day. I presume that is because my bill was NEGATIVE!! Also, we had a power outage a few weeks back and the system kicked in to take over perfectly. All of this would not be possible without Ilumen’s excellent guidance and execution on my project. John Wilkins20 May 2025My solar power panels were down due to squirrel wanting it for their winter/summer home under my panels and to chew up my wires. My original solar company went out of business over 18 months ago. After many, many phone calls and false promises. I had pretty much given up hope of fixing my system, 15 companies overall . Ilumen Solar [number 16] was the only ones willing to take action and fix what needed to be fix and upgraded any issues (CRITTER NETTING) .The installers sent out were top notch and got the job done AND we both learned that squirrels are quite resourceful on setting up house THE BOTTOM LINE is that your company helped me out to get back on line so THANK YOU ALL!! It was actually quite difficult finding someone I felt comfortable enough with to do my install, and am very happy to have found iLumen. They were extremely communicative, thorough, up-front, honest, and completed a great install. And because my install was on new construction, the timelines get messy but they were always there when needed. After completion of the install I had a good laugh when I got a call ComEd asking why our meter was running backwards and if we had installed solar. Guess the system works!Posted on Google

The contractor was very passionate about how good these guys are. Ilumen Solar just completed the install of my Solar System and let me tell you, they absolutely delivered! What began as a typical project turned into a long journey due to unforeseen delays (specifically with Com-ED), and construction upgrades on our end. Despite the drawn out timeline, Zach & Dan at Ilumen Solar remained patient, understanding, and committed to our project. From the very beginning, the team worked closely with us, providing updates, answering every question we had especially helpful as a newbie to solar. Their customer service truly stood out when we had to deal with roofing inspections/roofing warranties where they went above and beyond to make sure things went smoothly with the roofers. The only thing we would warn to someone looking to install solar is the additional cost associated with maintaining roofing warranties. There was a mix-up with the Elk Gove Village inspection but Ilumen quickly corrected the issue which was just another example of quality customer service. The final solar layout on our roof is fantastic, and we’re already seeing the great positive impact of the solar panels on our energy costs without even a full winter month of generating. He did a great job describing the benefits of solar and designing a system for my home. Zach is a straightforward, honest and proactive professional. Unlike other less reputable providers, he didn’t try to talk me into decisions that were not economical or in my best interest. Zach’s integrity demonstrated throughout the quote process was what led me to hire Ilumen to design and build my system. He and his team (Dilip and Dan) were great throughout the execution of the project. They openly and frequently communicated progress, what was needed from me (home access, signatures for permits, input into decisions, etc.). Laurel Kramer14 March 2023We used ilumen for our solar project in the winter of 22/23 and I cannot say enough good things about Zach and his team! Prior to meeting with Zach, I spent a lot of time researching installers in the area and reading through a lot of their reviews. After some initial internet research I contacted a bunch of companies and ended up meeting with 6. Below, are a few things that made ilumen a no brainer for me 1- How many reviews just raved about Zach and his work ethic. To be honest, it was hard to find too many negative reviews for any company, but it was more unique that people not only seemed to love their final product, but with ilumen customers also loved the people they got to work with along the road. Dan and Zach were both great at handling any questions and overseeing the project from start to finish, and the crews they brought it to complete the install and electric were all amazing. 2- Their ability to explain things in ways that made sense to me, someone who knows absolutely nothing about electricity and before starting to research for this project knew nothing about solar. 3- Their flexibility. We made a few changes throughout the initial steps of the process opting for a bigger system than initially proposed. I love that they didn’t initially try to upsell us on a bigger system but were happy to accommodate when I said I want more! 4- High level of engagement throughout the whole process. I am not sure Zach sleeps. He seemed to be on the job 24/7! He is so on the ball and wants to make sure his clients know that he and his team are there for any questions or concerns throughout the process. 5- Competitive Pricing. Going into this I knew I wasn’t just going to go with the cheapest company because it was important for me to go with someone I trusted and would do great work. Luckily, with ilumen, I ended up getting both! Though I cannot say there was a huge difference in the prices quoted from various companies, ilumen did manage to beat them all! 6- Knowledge of tax credits and state incentives. Shockingly not all companies will handle this process to the extent ilumen will or even offer the SREC at all. Mitch SuperKnot (тнеsuрегкиот)2 June 2022When I decided to put solar panels on my roof, I got bids from a national chain and two local installers, including Ilumen. During the bidding and comparison stage, Ilumen was absolutely the most-communicative and the most-comprehensive, and looking back, I don’t think I would have gotten the experience that I got here anywhere else. Zach sent over several proposals during my bid process with different configurations of panel size and OEM. He talked me through each one to make sure I understood the process and what he was proposing I buy, and scheduled a quick video chat when we finally settled on one to go through the paperwork. I genuinely appreciated that, contrasted with the national chain who wanted me to sign a contract before they would even come look at the property. I really couldn’t be happier with the work Ilumen did on my Solar PV system. It works great, and it looks even better. The design called for running all the conduit (the bane of most solar installs) in our attic for a clean look, and it was absolutely the right call. The entire process, from the first email I sent talking about wanting to put solar on my roof to turning the panels on was 111 days. Zach, Dan and their team were professionals the entire time. I had questions. Like, a lot of questions. The number of questions that would lead me to get frustrated if I were on the other end of them. Equipment choice. Financing. Data. Permits. Permission To Operate. And it never seemed to phase them. If they needed clarification on some question I had, or accommodating some last-minute rescheduling changes because of some weather, they made sure I stayed in the loop the entire time. When we specced out the system, the panels we wanted were in short supply, but they were available weeks ahead of our scheduled install, meaning they would proably be gone by the time our install was scheduled. Zach suggested shipping the panels to my home instead, and they live in my garage until the install. I respect that kind of creative problem solving. Zach and Dan came by to unload and inspect them, and there were no further issues on availability. After our install got pushed back a week to one where I would be out of town, I was worried. I kind of assumed I was going to be a helicopter client (which unfortunately I already understood I was going to be, regardless). But Ilumen and their installer contracting team handled everything in my absence and kept me in the loop on everything, including identifying some chimney repairs that we’d previously considered resolved but had returned in recent years. You can safely trust these professionals to know what they’re doing. If you're still shopping around for Solar PV in the area and haven't already, please include Ilumen in your bids. After initially talking last fall with a company that leases their system for 20 years, I looked into the option of purchasing. I met in person with Zach and he thoroughly answered my extensive list of questions and it quickly became obvious that purchasing a solar system was the better way to go, especially with current incentives. In addition, Zach is passionate about this industry and his knowledge is extensive. After deciding to move forward, all the stages went surprisingly smoothly. From the agreements, to the permitting, to the installation, through to the system activation. Updates from Zach and Dan were frequent and the installers they use, Fresh Coast Solar, were very professional, easy going, and they did a great job. Next for the results. I went live with my installation on January 2. My January electric bill was down 40% from last year, my bill for February was half of last year, and I am currently on track to have a credit for the month of March. And this is in the off season! Piotr Pietrzkiewicz18 February 2022I was on a search for a good solar installer realizing that I would have some shade on my roof I googled solar pannels specifically designed to accomodate shaded roofs. That is how I stumbled on Zach and ilumen. Zach has expalined to me the advantages of all sort of options for my roof condition. Also, others have fallen wayside once I compared the their proposals and ilumen's. He guided me through the approval process with ComEd. I was explained the difference between wattage of the system, projected production with expected irradiation from the sun (I have partial or temporary shade) and how ComEd views all of the above when approving a project. Any questions were answered promptly and completely. The project after sizing and approval from regulators came on time and almost seamlessly in spite of the fact that the weather did not completely cooperated. It was installed in December. I have now great looking roof and monitor the production with zeal of a neophyte. LOL. It is the first month of production for me. The whole team has shown high professional standards. They walked me through all the pros and cons of a solar PV installation, the tax credits and the state energy credit system. Installing the system was a bit complex because we had a backup natural gas generator but iLumen arranged for a hookup that did not disturb it. The installation was done cleanly and all our neighbors comment on the look and finish. I recommend them without hesitation for any solar PV installation. I want to continue to recommend them. I did a lot of research and received many quotes. Ilumen was solid on all three aspects of price, quality, and design to maximize my home's solar output. Zach designed a very clean layout and there is no conduit visible from the front of the house! Zach and Dan were available and able to answer all of my questions throughout the process. Kevin Spry3 June 2021My whole experience with Ilumen solar was very pleasant. Zach and his team did an amazing job of scoping out our job and delivering on the promises made. We had the team do some additional electrical work on top of the solar install and everything came out great. We now only pay for access with Comed (about $15 per month). Installers showed up on time and did a great job. We were installed in less than 2 full days. I love the clean look of all our coduit going through our attic, this eliminates the ugly shinny conduit you see some solar companies lay right on top of the roof instead of going the extra mile of hiding it in the attic for a clean look. Rob Usiskin13 April 2021We got quotes from 4 solar developers to put an array on our house. ilumen Solar was the least expensive by a small margin, and the service and communication were excellent from start to finish. The only issue was a delay of a few months in sourcing the Solaria panels we ordered, but it seems clear that was due to a widespread year-end rush of orders that was mostly beyond their control. The final system looks awesome and is performing great so far. We are happy to recommend ilumen Solar!Posted on Google

Bob Neil24 February 2021We used Ilumen for our Solar project and selected the Solaria 360W panels. Everything went extremely well with the process and Zach was extremely helpful and patient with us as we debated many different possible arrangements on our complicated roof. The install went extremely well and we have had no issues with the panels or any of the associated work. The original production estimate for our system was that we would produce 12.27 MW on an annual basis. We just completed our first year and we actually produced 13.61 MW. So we produced almost 11% more than advertised by the panels. Couldn't be happier with Ilumen and with the Solaria panels.Posted on Google

Ilumen Solar was not only the lowest bid but with Zach Witt at ilumen—all my questions and concerns were patiently addressed. I was a bit skeptical at first as I have had promises made by contractors in the past and have been disappointed. Zach was true to his word. The installation went smoothly and our system is now generating energy based on the estimates that were given in the initial proposal. I think the big advantage you have with ilumen Solar is that you can actually talk to and meet someone who will help guide you through the process. Going through a faceless national company doesn’t necessarily save you money and you will not get the level of customer service you will with ilumen. Amanda17 October 2020I just got my first bill with solar, and already see a large reduction! Once I rack up SRECs next summer, it should cover 100% off-set year round. Zach did a great job explaining the process to me, and was very patient with my 10000 questions and concerns. He never came across as a salesman, just a normal guy who likes to nerd out on energy efficiency. He was there during the install with Rethink Electric to make sure everything was going smoothly. He noticed some were a bit crooked and made the installers go back up to straighten it, which I don't think many larger companies would have done (and that was before I even noticed). Overall, the process took me 10 weeks from contact signing to system on. I'm glad I went solar with iLumen, and hope to see more houses in Chicago joining in. (I'm a very skeptical person, and I can now personally tell you it's not a scam, haha.)Posted on Google

Zack the owner also payed close attention to what I wanted and a kind of installation I desired. Ilumen solar was the only Solar Company to come to my house and give a complete and thorough quote. I was also impressed that Zack flew a drone over the roof to get accurate measurements of the house and the roof. also, no other Solar Company did the legwork to come out and give a such a thorough evaluation. I am overall satisfied with the quote and no additional cost for added. After interviewing 7 other solar companies ranging from Tesla to well established in-state companies, I found the ownership and accountability at ilumen brilliant. Not only were they the only company who seemed truly invested in the Illinois rebate program, they were the only company capable of explaining current Illinois rebate legislation IN addition to the technical questions involved production installation. I felt completely secure with my investment @ ilumen and have recommended them to various friends, family and neighbors. What truly sets them apart from other installers is the one-one interaction regarding question and answers regarding risks and benefits of solar. I worked with ilumen for 15months prior to signing a contract and they have been nothing but profession, patient and proven to be the best. Additionally, at the time of my decision they were one of the few installers to offer a higher capacity wattage producing product from California, worked directly with the city of Elmhurst fire department regarding array placement and delivered the product installment on time even around my new roof replacement.
